Here are 7 safety rules every family using home oxygen must follow:
- Never use oil or grease near the cylinder or regulator
2. Keep the cylinder away from open flames
Keep the cylinder at least 3 metres away from gas stoves, candles, incense sticks, and any other open flame. Do not allow smoking in the same room as an oxygen cylinder.
3. Store the cylinder upright and secured
Always store the cylinder standing upright, secured with a chain, stand, or strap against a wall. A falling cylinder can damage the valve — and a cylinder with a broken valve becomes a dangerous projectile.
4. Never leave the valve open when oxygen is not in use
Always close the cylinder valve when the patient is not using oxygen. Leaving it open fills the room with oxygen-enriched air, which dramatically increases fire risk.
5. Check for leaks before each use
Before turning on the cylinder, check all connections. If you hear a hissing sound or smell oxygen, turn off the cylinder immediately, open windows, and call your supplier. Do not use electrical switches or open flames until the area is ventilated.
6. Keep the pressure gauge monitored
Do not let the cylinder run completely empty. At below 25 bar, the flow may become inconsistent. Keep a spare cylinder at home and call for refill before the active cylinder drops too low.
7. Keep children away from cylinders
Oxygen cylinders are medical equipment — not toys. Keep children away from the cylinder, regulator, and tubing at all times.
